Hello! Today I’m bringing you another anime review; Junjou Romantica season 1.

I’m going to kick this off by saying that if you’re a big fan of the show, you probably aren’t going to like my review. I have some big issues with it. That being said, if you want to stick around then do so. If not, then that’s OK too.

Three very different couples caught up in a storm of pure romance! Romantica: Misaki is struggling to prepare for his college entrance exams, but his nightmare is just beginning when his tutor comes on to him! Egoist: Just when Kamijou’s life is at its lowest, he meets Nowaki. His name means “typhoon,” and he’s about to take Kamijou on a whirlwind ride. Terrorist: Miyagi always seems to shrug off the cares of the world, but even he has problems. Foremost is Shinobu, a relentless man who’s adamant that they’re destined to be together. – Crunchyroll.com

What I Liked

I feel like most of the characters on their own are likable. They have their own personalities and stand apart from one another. They don’t have to rely on their significant other to be entertaining.

This show tackles some real world problems as well. The stress of college exams, what happens when you fall in love with someone much older, unrequited love, etc.

The last thing I enjoyed was the music. The opening theme is super upbeat without being annoying, and it fits the tone of the show well for the most part.

What I Disliked

Ok… let’s jump into this.

My biggest problem in this season is a lack of healthy relationships from the get go. Two out of the three couples started off by sexually assaulting the other… how is that OK? Misaki lets Usami do whatever he wants and passes it off as him being a sheltered rich guy who doesn’t know any better. Their whole relationship, at least in the beginning, is based off of Misaki being super stubborn and Usami being a total jerk. No, it’s not charming, it’s gross.

Miyagi and Shinobu irritated me a little less, but not by much. Their relationship is centered around Shinobu falling in love with his sisters ex-husband. That in general isn’t a bad thing. Love doesn’t always work the way people expect it to. What got me was what happens when Miyagi finally gets angry enough to do something about this kid that won’t leave him alone. He SEXUALLY ASSAULTS HIM. Why is this a common factor throughout this show??!! There are so many other ways he could’ve gone about getting his point across. On top of that, the kid is 17….. I have no more words.

The only couple that I actually like is Kamijou and Nawaki. They are dysfunctional and both have some personal issues, but they obviously care about one another. At least I get one reasonably healthy relationship.

Besides the terrible character interactions, the art also through me off. It got progressivly different throughout the season and not in a good way. It was almost enough to make me turn the show off completely.

Final Thoughts

If you couldn’t tell, I don’t like this show. I think it’s poorly written and pushes the line in terrible ways. If you’re into yaoi (MalexMale relationships) then you’ve probably already heard about it, but I recommend finding something better to watch.
