Hello! This weeks manga report is a story called Ajin: Demi – Human, a supernatural kind of manga revolving around immortal beings called Demi – Humans. I am currently reading it on Crunchyroll, but as far as I know it’s only accessible if you are a premium member.

Summary

These undying beings start to be known as “demi-humans.” One day, just before summer break, a Japanese boy leaving his high school is involved in a traffic accident that kills him on the spot. My Thoughts (Spoilers)

I’m intrigued. It’s always hard when starting a new series; you have to get to know new characters and dive into their back stories. Sakurai did a great job at capturing the mind of a teenager intent upon doing everything right. Studying hard in school, having the friends people would assume he has, etc. The crash completely discombobulates him and makes his thought process do a complete 180. Instead of worrying about college, he’s trying to just stay away from the people who would cash him in.

Kei and Kai are both written super well. The both embody two completely different character types, super serious and carefree. So far they seem to be balancing out well with each other on their runaway journey.

The idea of an immortal type human isn’t a new one, but the way it’s portrayed in Ajin is unique. People don’t realize their Demi – Humans until they die and come back to life. It’s a gruesome tale that is good about staying within the line of being bloody without getting full on gory. On top of that, people aren’t afraid of them. It’s actually the opposite, they’re trying to catch Kei for the huge reward they’ll get in return. It’s an interesting spin on things.

Final Thoughts

While only being one volume into the story, it seems promising. We have an air of mystery surrounding Kei and the demi – humans as well as Kai and his involment in all of this. If supernatural and possibly paranormal mystery is your thing, then you should definitely be looking into Ajin: Demi – Humans.
